A Short History of the Alaska State Flag

In May of 1927, long before statehood, the Alaska Territorial Legislature adopted what is today's Alaska state flag. Amazingly, the unique and easily recognizable design of gold stars forming the "Big Dipper" constellation and the "North Star" on a blue background came from the imagination of a child. Thirteen-year-old John Bell (Benny) Benson, an Aleut orphan from Chignik, submitted the flag and won in a contest sponsored by the Alaska chapter of the American Legion.
