A Short History of the California State Flag
The early pioneers who made their way to California in the first half of the nineteenth century struggled to free themselves from the yoke of Mexican rule and establish the "California Republic." The original California flag was the invention of settler William L. Todd and was first raised at Sonoma on June 14, 1846 to signal the start of the "Bear Flag Revolt."
Although the original Bear Flag was destroyed in the earthquake of 1906, a photograph survived and has served as the basis for the design of the modern-day California flag, which was adopted by the state legislature in 1911. The flag features the same elements as the original - the bear, a lone star, the words "California Republic," and a stripe along the bottom hem - but the arrangement was cleaned up a bit.
