A Short History of the Alabama State Flag

Though Alabama was admitted to the Union in 1819, the first Alabama state flag was not adopted until 1861 when a resolution passed in the state legislature establishing the "Republic of Alabama Flag." Within a month however, the lone flag was damaged in a storm and was never returned to service. Eventually, in 1895, the legislature adopted the current flag according to the following passage: "The flag of the state of Alabama shall be a crimson cross of St. Andrew on a field of white. The bars forming the cross shall be not less than six inches broad, and must extend diagonally across the flag from side to side."
