Edward England, an Irish pirate operating off the African Coast and Indian Ocean, is the pirate responsible for the classic skull and crossbones flag. England was most successful at the beginning of his career when he was plundering slave ships leaving Africa, but died a wash-up begging for food in Madagascar.
