Does Barack Obama’s Ancestry Matter?
The left, completely obsessed with race (as opposed to racism), is in the throes of a quest to come to terms with Barack Obama’s mixed racial heritage. In a Baltimore Sun story today, writers David Nitkin and Harry Merritt tell us that “one of Obama’s great-great-great-great grandfathers, George Washington Overall, owned two slaves who were recorded in the 1850 census in Nelson County, Ky. The same records show that one of Obama’s great-great-great-great-great-grandmothers, Mary Duvall, also owned two slaves.”
So what? If it was customary to judge a person based on the sins of ancestors, every one of us would be doomed. I’m not a fan of Obama’s because of his leftist views, but he should, and will, be judged based on who he is, what he says, and what he does. The leftist media should dispense with their self-conscious examination of Obama’s “intriguing family history” and tell us more about Obama himself.
