Every age has it’s tyrants and ours is no different. But in today’s America, the tyrants are not who you might think, at least, if you listen to and believe the dominant media.
The New York Times and CNN, in a constant state of agitation over the imagined clandestined activities of the Bush administration, would have us all believe that George Bush is hunkered down in some dark closet of the White House listening to your phone conversations while Dick Cheney is right now walking up your front steps with shotgun in hand.
The real tyrants are those who bellow about free speech while filing lawsuits to prevent you from offending them or chant the mantra of diversity while fretting over the influence of Christians in the public square. These wolves in sheep’s clothing are at it again in Ft. Pierce, Florida.
A local contingent of noxious citizenry using the deceptive cover of “Concerned Citizens Committee of St. Lucie County” tried and failed to have the Confederate flag banned from a “Bike Nite” rock concert. Rock band Crossbones uses the Confederate flag as a backdrop but they’re not the first. Gram Parsons, the Allman Brothers and Lynrd Skynrd, to name a few, have all used the flag as backdrop at one time or another.
Mayor Bob Benton, evidently recognizing that the bikers who would actually be watching the show aren’t exactly going to walk out at the sight of a Confederate flag, declined to take action against the band, citing their constitutional right of free speech. It’s just a guess, but I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if we found out that the same group of concerned citizens offended at the sight of the Confederate flag would vigorously support another’s right to burn the American flag.
