Australian “Resistance” To Sell Flag Burning Kits

A few weeks ago I was discussing with my son (he’s the technical genius at Flagstuff.com) the very large numbers of flags that cranks the world over burn to demonstrate hatred. Historically, that hatred is aimed at the U.S. and the flag of choice is the American flag, but that’s not always the case. Most recently, burning the Danish flag, with the occasional Norwegian or U.S. flag thrown in, has been the activity of choice for the die-hard Hate America crowd.

Wondering where all those flags came from, and speculating about the opportunities to be had in the protest flag market, we cooked up an idea to sell flags in a kit for burning. The idea was a joke, of course, but we had some laughs dreaming up the details. We would name the company “Easy-Lite Flags” and the kits would consist of the flag of your choice specially treated with something flammable, a pack of matches, and easy instructions.

Little did we know how prophetic our short conversation that day would be. A socialist student organization in Australia has announced they have flag burning kits for sale. The organization, known as Resistance, is distributing kits that include an Australian flag, a butane lighter, some type of flammable material and a propaganda leaflet for $5 US.

Resistance issued an official statement explaining the rationale behind the kits, “The flag-burning kit displays the sentiment that many young people feel, given the Australian government’s racist refugee policy, its treatment of indigenous people, its use of violence against protesters, its support of US foreign policy and its oppressive military role in the Asia Pacific.”

As for the group’s socialist credentials, I will vouch for them. Only socialists could enter into a capitalist venture (selling something) and loose money.
